  • Hamilton Specialist Referrals (HSR) offers a truly world class orthopaedic referral service. As well as being Diplomates of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS) and recognised by the European Board of Veterinary Specialisation, our surgeons are RCVS Recognised Specialists in Orthopaedics, ensuring the highest possible standards of care for your clients and their pets.
    • HSR has the latest technologies to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of any form of orthopaedic disease or injury. There is a 1.5T high-field MRI and computerised tomography (CT) suite on site and the hospital has invested in the latest direct (DR) digital radiography systems. We routinely use computerised gait analysis to aid in the diagnosis of complex multilimb lameness and employ the same technology to monitor recovery from surgery. This individual approach to post-operative rehabilitation optimises outcomes and shortens recovery times.

Such cases present with varying degrees of pain, weakness and incoordination. MRI is seen at the gold standard in imaging of the spine as it provides unrivalled resolution of the neurological structures. HSR boasts an on-site 1.5T high-field MRI scanner, which allows rapid acquisition of the highest quality images to facilitate accurate and precise surgical planning.

    • Lumbosacral Disease
    • Spinal fractures
    • Fibrocartilaginous Embolism (FCE)
    • Hemilaminectomy & Ventral Slot - Our spinal surgeons have vast expertise in performing decompressive hemilaminectomy and ventral slot in the treatment of disc extrusions of the thoracolumbar and cervical spine respectively. Such cases often require prompt surgical decompression and we provide an efficient but friendly service for you and your clients and we hope our expertise will reassure at what can be a difficult time.
    • Spinal fusion, foraminotomy & dorsal laminectomy - Large breed dogs more commonly suffer from more chronic disc protrusions, similar to the situation in people. These cases have their own challenges and we offer a full range of surgical options for dogs suffering from Wobbler syndrome, thoracolumbar disc protrusion and lumbosacral disease.
    • Spinal malformations and arachnoid diverticuliWe also perform complex spinal surgeries in small breeds including the treatment of spinal deformities and diverticuli in brachycephalic breeds, and the treatment of atlantoaxial subluxation in toy breeds. In selected cases we use high resolution CT imaging and computer assisted design (CAD) software to aid in placing surgical implants with the highest levels of surgical precision and accuracy.

    Neuromuscular diseases

Electrodiagnostics & Electromyography (EMG)Myaesthenia gravis, polymyositis and polyradiculoneuritis are commonly seen diseases, however there is a vast array of neuromuscular disorders and our specialist team have extensive experience in the diagnosis of some of these more unusual presentations. To ensure your pet does not have to go through unnecessary invasive treatment we provide a range of advanced imaging diagnostics to identify the root cause of problems and create a bespoke solution of corrective treatments.
    • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a type of scan that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of the inside of the body. We have an on-site 1.5 Tesla MRI machine specifically manufactured for use in animals.
    • A CT scan, also known as computed tomography scan, makes use of computer-processed combinations of many X-ray measurements taken from different angles to produce cross-sectional (tomographic) images (virtual "slices") of specific areas of a scanned object, allowing the user to see inside the object without cutting.
