Small Animal Anaesthesia Internship

Hamilton Specialist Referrals is a purpose built state-of-the-art veterinary hospital which provides the latest in cutting edge, specialist treatments for cats and dogs, supported by an exceptional rehabilitation and physiotherapy facility. We deliver world-class, exemplary clinical services, with a clear focus on the people that make that a reality. Hamilton Specialist Referrals was born of the belief that there is room for a new wave of veterinary excellence across the UK. Excellent clinical care, that is second-to-none, delivered in a friendly and supportive manner to referring vets, is paramount to the team. The hospital is operational 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and is able to offer the most advanced treatment options available for orthopaedic, neurology, cardiology and soft tissue cases. Facilities include on-site 1.5T MRI and CT scanner suites, a variety of joint replacement systems, electrodiagnostics, and a full complement of the latest radiography and arthroscopy equipment.

HSR is a fast growing hospital and currently employs over 120 team members. Within our clinic, interns form an integral part of our dedicated team. As our team and services are growing, we are now looking to increase our team of Veterinary Interns. We are looking to recruit an Anaesthesia Intern, to work alongside our Anaesthesia & Analgesia Specialists, Dr Marieke De Vries and Dr Kristina Lehnus. Our hospital offers ground-breaking treatments and gold-standard care across all disciplines, all of which would be impossible without the involvement of our Anaesthesia Team.

If you are a team player wishing to make a difference, aspiring to work in a fun and nurturing environment with professional support, development opportunities and a strong focus on employee wellbeing, then we’d love to hear from you! We offer a specialist-led internship programme for the duration of 13 months. The role consists of varying shifts to suit the needs of a 24/7/365 hospital, which includes the care of in-house patients during out of hours. Active involvement in client communication and patient care is expected, with participation in anaesthesia planning and treatments/surgeries.

Candidates wishing to apply should be MRCVS or MRCVS eligible, be proactive, enthusiastic and a great team player but also be able to use their own initiative and self-motivate. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to multi-task with a flexible approach to working are a must.

Applicants must also be eligible to work in the UK and have the appropriate Visa documents. It would also be desirable that applicants provide evidence of competency in speaking English, as determined by a formal qualification in English (such as IELTS or TOEFL).

Interns will work with their supervising clinician to participate effectively in all aspects of planning, diagnosis and treatment of cases. Animal welfare and the ethics of interventions must be considered by balancing practical and financial factors when determining appropriate patient care. Therefore, the ability to apply prior knowledge and experience to maintain the high clinical standards expected within our hospitals is essential.

Interns will openly engage in case discussions with the senior supervising clinicians, residents and senior nursing team and should contribute to a positive, informative, respectful and

inclusive environment for all. Attention to detail, particularly with maintaining accurate records and written correspondence is also a key component of this role.

For the right people, we provide:

  • Competitive salary of £31,000 per annum
  • Professional memberships paid (relevant to role)
  • 5 days CPD allowance and financial support for attending conferences
  • A strong focus on employee wellbeing and mental health, including regular sessions with an industry-specific resilience coach, stress management and performance coaches
  • Wide range of employee benefits, including private healthcare, monthly wellbeing allowance, and twice weekly fresh fruit deliveries
  • A nurturing, friendly and supportive working environment

Located in modern facilities, HSR is based in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, within easy reach of London, Oxford, the Chilterns and Cotswolds.
