Small Animal Internal Medicine Internship

Hamilton Specialist Referrals is a purpose built state-of-the-art veterinary hospital which provides the latest in cutting edge, specialist treatments for cats and dogs, supported by an exceptional rehabilitation and physiotherapy facility. We deliver world-class, exemplary clinical services, with a clear focus on the people that make that a reality. Hamilton Specialist Referrals was born of the belief that there is room for a new wave of veterinary excellence across the UK. Excellent clinical care, that is second-to-none, delivered in a friendly and supportive manner to referring vets, is paramount to the team. The hospital is operational 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and is able to offer the most advanced treatment options available for orthopaedic, neurology, cardiology and soft tissue cases. Facilities include on-site 1.5T MRI and CT scanner suites, a variety of joint replacement systems, electrodiagnostics, and a full complement of the latest radiography and arthroscopy equipment.

We are proud to announce that we are now inviting applications for a Small Animal Internal Medicine Intern.  This role is the perfect opportunity to work collaboratively with highly experienced Internal Medicine Diplomats and expand your skills, knowledge and experience. This internship would be best suited to someone looking to pursue an Internal Medicine Residency next year. We offer a specialist-led internship programme for a duration of up to 13 months. The role consists of varying shifts to suit the needs of a 24/7/365 hospital, which includes care of in-house patients during out of hours. Active involvement in client communication and patient care is expected, with participation in consults and treatments/surgeries.

Our internal medicine internship includes rotations through nights and weekends, with time off to perform externships in other referral institutes. Teaching is an essential component, with interns expected to participate in weekly scheduled didactic seminars and lectures, M+M rounds which are intern lead, and weekly journal clubs and radiology rounds.

Candidates wishing to apply must be MRCVS, be proactive, enthusiastic and a great team player but also be able to use their own initiative and self-motivate. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to multi-task with a flexible approach to working are a must.

Applicants must also be eligible to work in the UK and have the appropriate Visa documents if needed. It would also be desirable that applicants provide evidence of competency in speaking English, as determined by a formal qualification in English (such as IELTS or TOEFL).

Interns will work with their supervising clinician to participate effectively in all aspects of planning, diagnosis and treatment of cases. Animal welfare and the ethics of interventions must be considered by balancing practical and financial factors when determining appropriate patient care. Therefore, the ability to apply prior knowledge and experience to maintain the high clinical standards expected within our hospitals is essential.

Interns will openly engage in case discussions with the senior supervising clinicians, residents and senior nursing team and should contribute to a positive, informative, respectful and inclusive environment for all. Attention to detail, particularly with maintaining accurate records and written correspondence is also a key component of this role.

The start date for this internship is 3rd July 2023.

If you would like to apply, please send a copy of your CV and cover letter to careers@hamiltonspecialists.vet
