Dr Alan Sweeney

OOH Senior Emergency Veterinary Surgeon

Dr Alan Sweeney - OOH Senior Emergency Veterinary Surgeon
Dr Alan Sweeney MVB PgCert EMERG MRCVS OOH Senior Emergency Veterinary Surgeon

Alan graduated from University College Dublin in 2016 and later completed a postgraduate certificate in Emergency and Critical Care through the University of Chester. Having grown up on a farm, he developed an early interest in veterinary medicine and began working at his local practice at the age of 13, cleaning kennels, answering phones and, of course, making tea. Veterinary medicine has been a constant throughout his working life, and he has never worked outside the profession.

Alan moved to London in 2019 to pursue a career in emergency and out-of-hours veterinary medicine. Since then, he has developed broad experience in the assessment, stabilisation and treatment of critically ill and injured patients, including trauma, respiratory emergencies, acute abdominal disease, gastric dilatation-volvulus and septic abdominal conditions.

As the Senior Out-of-Hours and Emergency Veterinary Surgeon at Hamilton's, Alan manages critical inpatients, receives emergency referrals and provides overnight clinical support to referring veterinary surgeons. One particularly memorable case involved the successful endoscopic removal of an oesophageal foreign body at 2am, made possible by the hospital’s experienced team and advanced emergency facilities.

Alan particularly enjoys the variety and unpredictability of emergency work, as well as the teamwork required to deliver high-quality care around the clock. Outside work, he enjoys cooking for friends and playing tennis. He lives with his cat, Marvin, who is very much the boss of the household.
